S.983, Eviction Record Sealing Full Committee Hearing
Apr

S.983, Eviction Record Sealing Full Committee Hearing

Pack the Room for S.983

Eviction Record Sealing Full Committee Hearing

South Carolina tenants have waited long enough. We have been emailing our legislators, sending postcards, and calling their offices non-stop.

We finally have a subcommittee hearing for S.983, the Eviction Record Sealing Bill, and we need to PACK THE ROOM.

This hearing is a critical step toward ending the practice of eviction records following people for life, even when cases are dismissed or resolved. Lawmakers need to see and feel the people most impacted by this crisis in the room.

Why This Matters

In South Carolina, an eviction filing becomes public record the moment it’s filed. That record can block families from housing, jobs, and stability for years, sometimes forever. S983 would give tenants a real second chance.

What to Expect

  • Attend a legislative subcommittee hearing at the Statehouse

  • Tenants and allies showing visible, collective support for eviction record sealing

  • A powerful, organized presence demanding movement on H.4270

Tenant & Accessibility Support

SC Tenant Union is committed to making sure tenants and working-class people can be in the room. We will provide:

  • Gas cards for those who need transportation support

  • Carpool coordination

  • Care items (fidgets, snacks, small bites)

  • Light snacks and bevs provided

No one should be excluded from democracy because of cost, stress, or access barriers.

Want to Testify?

We will be coordinating tenant speakers for this hearing, but we need as many written testimonies as possible!

If you have lived experience with eviction, housing instability, or the long-term harm of eviction records, send written testimony to

Tentative Schedule

  • The hearing begins at 2:00 pm, but attendees are highly encouraged to arrive early.

  • Though the hearing starts at 2, we do not know the order bills will be reviewed so prepare to sit for 30 minutes or possibly a couple hours.

Let’s show legislators what tenant power looks like. Let’s pack the room. Let’s move S983 forward together.

Virtual Strategy Session: Eviction Record Sealing Power Hour
Apr

Virtual Strategy Session: Eviction Record Sealing Power Hour

We are closer than we have ever been to winning eviction record sealing in South Carolina.

  • S.983 is on the agenda for a full committee hearing

  • H.4270 has been placed on a contested calendar and could be debated at any moment

This is what power looks like. Lawmakers are reacting because tenants and communities across the state have organized, testified, called, emailed, and refused to be ignored.

Now we need to push harder than ever over the next two weeks to get this bill across the finish line.

Join us for a Power Hour (90 minutes) where we’ll align, strategize, and take action together to make eviction record sealing law by May 1.

What We’ll Cover:

  • 🔥 The latest updates on H.4270 & S.983

  • 📣 Where lawmakers stand and who we still need to move

  • 🛠️ Our strategy to apply maximum pressure (calls, emails, meetings)

  • 📞 How to mobilize your people to flood representatives we haven’t heard from

  • ⚡ Real-time action steps you can take immediately after the call

Why This Matters:

In South Carolina, an eviction filing can follow you for life even if you were never evicted. This bill is about ending that injustice and making sure a moment of hardship doesn’t become a permanent barrier to housing.

We didn’t come this far just to come this far.

This is the moment where we either win or let it slip.

Event Details:

  • Location: Zoom (link provided after RSVP)

  • Duration: 90 minutes

  • Who Should Attend: Tenants, organizers, advocates, community members, and anyone ready to take action

Write Your Legislator: Postcard Party for Eviction Record Sealing\

Join us at the library for a Postcard Party where community members will come together to take action in support of H.4270 and S.983, the Eviction Record Sealing bills.

Legislators have been very responsive to letters from constituents, and this is one of the most effective ways we can help move these bills forward. When lawmakers hear directly from people in their communities, it makes a real difference.

During this gathering, the South Carolina Tenant Union (SCTU) will provide:

  • Light snacks

  • A short, casual training on what eviction record sealing is and why it matters for South Carolina families

  • Simple guidance on how to contact and communicate with your legislators

You don’t need any prior experience because we’ll walk you through everything.

By the end of the event, you’ll have written a postcard to your lawmakers urging them to support H.4270 and S.983. SCTU will provide the postcards, cover the postage, and make sure your message gets delivered.

Come spend an hour with neighbors, learn about the issue, and leave knowing you’ve taken real action to support housing justice in South Carolina.
