Legislative Week of Action for H4270

to Jan 23

Legislative Week of Action for H4270

SC Tenant Union is launching a Legislative Week of Action — a statewide push to demand a subcommittee hearing and move H.4270, the Eviction Record Sealing Bill, forward. For one powerful week, tenants, families, faith leaders, and community partners across South Carolina will take coordinated action to make sure lawmakers hear us loud and clear: Eviction shouldn’t be a life sentence.

Throughout the week, we’ll host canvases, phone banks, legislative education, community art actions, story-sharing, district visits, and pressure tactics designed to build the people power necessary to win this bill. The more folks step in, the more pressure our lawmakers feel — and the stronger our statewide tenant movement becomes.

And we don’t want this energy centered in just one city.
We’re supporting actions across the entire state.
If you or your organization wants to host a canvass, postcard party, district visit, story circle, or any action in your community, reach out, and we’ll help you plan it.

Mark your calendars now. Together, we can win H.4270 and give South Carolina families the second chance they deserve.

Grassroots Lobby Day at the South Carolina Statehouse

Join SC Tenant Union and tenant leaders from across the state as we take our fight for Eviction Record Sealing (H.4270) straight to the Statehouse. This Grassroots Lobby Day is our moment to show legislators that the people most impacted by eviction — tenants, caregivers, workers, elders, and families- are watching, organizing, and demanding change.

We’ll gather together for a short training, walk through how to talk with legislators, review talking points, and support each other in sharing our stories with power and pride. Then we’ll move through the Statehouse in coordinated teams to tour the Statehouse, meet with lawmakers, deliver letters, and make clear that South Carolina needs a subcommittee hearing for H.4270 now.

Whether it’s your first time at the Statehouse or your fiftieth, you’ll have support, community, and a role to play.

Our presence is pressure. Our stories are strategy. Our collective power moves policy.

Join us as we bring the voices of tenants directly to the halls of power — and push H.4270 one step closer to victory.

Crafting Change: A Postcard Party for Eviction Record Sealing at Motherland Essentials

Did you know that South Carolina has one of the highest eviction rates in the entire country — with families evicted every six minutes? The Eviction Record Sealing Bill H. 4270 would allow eviction records to be sealed after a set period, giving families a fair chance to rebuild without being permanently blocked from stable housing.

Join the Tri-County Tenant Union and Motherland Essentials for a powerful community event where creativity meets action. We’re gathering to write postcards to our legislators, urging them to hold a subcommittee hearing for the Eviction Record Sealing Bill (H.4270). This bipartisan, family-centered bill gives South Carolinians a chance to rebuild after eviction, rather than being punished for life.

This is not just a craft day— it’s a people-powered action space. Come through, connect with other tenants, have some small bites and bevs, and take part in the movement to make housing justice a reality across our state.

After you write your postcard, enjoy pay-what-you-can crafts during Motherland Essentials’ Open Studio Hours. Because in our movement, joy, healing, and action belong together. Proceeds go towards their Me By We Project to provide grocery store gift cards to those in need during the holiday season.

Choose Your Craft:

  • Candle Pouring – Blend your favorite scent and pour a candle that represents light, hope, and home.

  • Aromatherapy Bracelet – Design a bracelet that carries your intention for strength and resilience.

  • Incense Making – Mix herbs and oils that ground you in community and calm.

  • Bath Bomb Painting – Paint something bright and bold to remind yourself that rest is resistance.

RAD 101: Tenant Rights & Redevelopment in Charleston

Hybrid Training — In Person & Online

Charleston Housing Authority is moving forward with plans to redevelop Gadsden Green and Eastside public housing under HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program—but tenants and community members have been left out of the conversation. This training is designed to change that.

RAD 101 is a crash course for public housing tenants and community leaders who want to understand the basics of RAD redevelopment—what it is, how it works, and what rights tenants have when their homes are on the line. We’ll break down:

  • What RAD is and why it matters

  • How RAD is already impacting residents of Gadsden Green and Eastside

  • The responsibilities of Charleston Housing Authority and HUD

  • Your rights as a tenant and how to enforce them

  • What meaningful tenant involvement should look like

This redevelopment is more than a housing issue—it’s a racial justice issue. We know that without organized pushback and strong tenant leadership, RAD could be the final blow to Black neighborhoods on the Charleston peninsula, erasing generations of community through displacement and gentrification.

Tenants and community members will leave this session with a clear understanding of the process, the tools to start organizing, and a plan to make sure tenant voices are not only heard—but respected.

Snacks, travel support (gas cards), and childcare will be provided for in-person attendees. Please indicate any needs during registration.

Know Your Tenant Rights Workshop

Virtual Workshop hosted by SC Tenant Union + SC Legal Services

Knowledge is power—and every tenant deserves to know their rights and how to fight back when those rights are violated. This workshop is for renters across South Carolina who want to better understand the laws that protect us and how to assert your rights when they are being violated.

In this virtual session, we’ll cover:

  • Your basic rights as a tenant under South Carolina law

  • What landlords are legally required to do—and what they can’t do

  • How to enforce your rights and respond to violations

  • What steps to take if you're facing eviction, unsafe conditions, or landlord harassment

We’re partnering with SC Legal Services to walk through real-life scenarios, share practical tools, and answer your questions. At the end of the session, we’ll have time for a Q&A with host attorney, Caroline Witz.

This is our most attended workshop for a reason—tenants leave more informed, confident and powerful.

Tenant Rights Are Power: Public Housing Tenant Training

SC Tenant Union is bringing together public housing tenants from across South Carolina for a powerful rights-based training rooted in truth, protection, and collective power. We’re partnering with the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) to host a session focused on your rights as a public housing resident—what those rights are, how to enforce them, and what to do when they’re violated.

Too many of us are facing unsafe conditions, threats of eviction, harassment, or being ignored by housing authorities. This training is designed to equip you with the tools to fight back, organize, and demand the housing we deserve.

We’re not just educating—we’re organizing. This is a space for tenants to come together, learn, and build the power we need to make change in our communities.

At the end of the session, there will be time for Q&A and discussion with experts from NLIHC and SC Tenant Union.
